also, if you have a dinette in the back (as I do) the opening for the 'basement' is limited to the size of the space between the benches. Mine's a 17.5" square opening, I can /just/ barely get my pit-2-go through the opening.

Thanks guys. Looks like all the EB's have a smaller opening. Nobody out there with an EB with the lockable storage??

Yes, the EB storage door is smaller due to the beam.

I don't know if the beam is not there on the RB or if it is somehow in a different location, but the RB opening is larger.

We talked about this with SMBTX during our planning and build.

I have not found the opening in our EB to be "too small" yet, and it is tuffed to the gills right now!

Right, it is only small in relation to the huge space of the XL. However it is a bit like 3D tetris at times to get something in or out.

Our biggest 3D tetris is the privy tent,... but it goes in and can be removed...

I do only put stuff in the XL that I don't think I will need, and then only stuff I will not need for setup. The cover is thin wood and the pull tab is pretty weak, so you have to clear everything off or risk a separation to open it.

It would not scare me to remove the beam/stifner. I think if you are fabing a new box you could easily make the area as strong or stronger than when it came from the factory.

it's easy to give advice when someone else is doing the cutting.

I'm not shy about taking the sawzall or the plasma cutter to my van but in this case I've allready built the box and I built it out of aluminium. I wanted to use my new tig welder. Since I can't figure out how to weld steel to aluminium the box needs to be bolted in. If I wanted to cut the beam then I think making the box out of steel would have been better as I could have welded it in place and probably ended up with something just as strong as that beam. Since I've allready got about 10 hours and over 100.00 worth of alumium tied up in the project I think I'll just leave the beam in place.

Wish I had a tig welder. Wish I had under floor storage too, but like having a second spare more.
