I also thought of mounting it on the side, but decided it wouldn't survive the first tree branch.

If your were to locate the a/c on the side of the van you could mount it in such a way that it could be retracted inside while driving and extended through the van wall via a locking access door when in use.

I'm thinking ...mount the a/c on a tray with HD drawer guides
ultimately it would depend on your interior layout .

I see no reason that wouldn't work, but it would be difficult to make it totally waterproof, and since I want to remove it completely in the fall, I'm still leaning towards the rear window. It's easy to remove and replace the glass, and bolting in a piece of plywood will be just as easy. I also fear the entire unit might not be up to the pounding it's likely to get, so if I don't cut any holes in the van, and the A/C ends up in the trash, I'm quickly back to stock.

Plus, the plywood will really enhance your hillybilly credibility.

I guess that would mean I had SOME credibility to begin with. Would painting the plywood white reduce that credibility/

Yes, but if you stop painting halfway through and just give up, you score extra hillbilly cred.

Being an Ozarker I'll try to get all the hillbilly credits I can get

Glad to hear that the window shaker works for you and I'm adding one to my van too, just differently.

I'm building a console between the front seats and it will hold my window AC unit. Inside the box I'll have three ducts, 2 fresh air ducts to the intake on each side and the rear for the condenser, a drain pan and drain will be vented out to the bottom. The AC will blow out toward the rear with the controls a short reach from either front seat.

The console will be insulated and sound proofed the best I can with accessories. It will still be low enough for us to crawl over from the front to the rear, gotta be able to get to the fridge at all times you know.

At least that is the thought for now. I'm trying to keep it stealthy.

All the best!

Brilliant! Some innovation!

makes me think about the portable units you see here and there with the external ducting......remove/rebuild the housing.......

I've decided to embrace my inner hillbilly. If you look closely, you can see the plywood we installed over the front windows of the new S.F. ferry for the trip South. I liked it so much, I decided to copy the look on the rear window of my van.
