Gas cap drops onto paint

The fuel cap is tethered and just hangs down onto the paint. Always bugged me.

So, I added a self tapping screw to the hinge.

Now the cap stays up off the paint.

Yes, thank you.

I just this afternoon replaced my gas cap with a locking gas cap and noticed how the cap touches the paint which bugs me too.

Someone make this man a trophy. The hanging cap pisses me off every time.

I have a tip that saved my paint from my clumsiness when I did this:

Before drilling the hole for the screw, wedge a piece of scrap wood between the curved arm and the body of the van when the fuel door is open. This kept my drill bit from contacting the body paint when it punched through the arm.

I wish I had the hanging cap! Instead I have the TransferFlow dual tanks and dual fillers, and I've left both caps at gas stations twice now.
