Home Brew Bike Rack

After seeing Phil's (pjpvi) bike rack that he designed and had made I realized that I wanted somthing similar. I liked how the bikes were not hanging out off of a receiver hitch or up high on the roof. They swing out with the gate on the Aluminess bumper. Phil was kind enough to send his info and drawings and I ended up making my own rack. Mine is certainly not as pretty but it works.
All told I have about $110 into it as I already had the bike trays. I cut and prepped aluminum angle and then had a friend weld it, then I bolted it to the tray. The inside of the tray corners are reinforced with aluminum angle as well. So far it has been great. The bikes don't move around like the do when mounted to a receiver or mounted on the roof. Now if I could only figure out a through axle mount for the wheel on my Yeti.

Nice work Saline!!! Do you happen to know the weight limit on the swing out? Just wondering since it looks like you've got 4 Scepters and 2 bikes + hardware = ? weight.

Re: Home Brew Bike Rack

Not sure what the weight capacity of the swingarm is. The rack weighs next to nothing because it's aluminum but with the two bikes and water it's probably pushing 225lbs. I have a rubber bumper catch and will be fabbing up a poly block for the swingarm to rest on in the closed position. I rarely have all the water cans full for any length of time though. We're kinda water hogs.

Re: Home Brew Bike Rack

Funny you should mention that. We drove all the way through Utah before I realized that I forgot to relocate the plate back onto the tray. I had the tray off for a few days while I fabbed up the bike rack. Never got pulled over while going incognito. Lucky.....
