Re: Larger gas tank & van hood mask?

If you do have SMB do the larger gas tank modification, have them modify the float device. My tank reads empty with 10 gallons left and engine goes in limp mode. It is annoying. I would also lower the uptake for the diesel fueled accessories, if you have them.

My v10 reads as you describe but no limp mode. Maybe a diesel thing, to avoid getting air in fuel system?

Re: Larger gas tank & van hood mask?

When Transfer flo first came out with the 46 gallon tank it said
it was for a Ford van with the Quigley conversion. They were
also under 1000 bucks. Wish I would have bought one back then.
Now they won't sell them direct to the public and I think both
Sportsmobile and Quadvan charge 2000 bucks. What a rip off.

Are both those prices installed prices. If the $1K is must a product price, and the $2K is an installed price, that's not much difference IMO. My general rule of thumb is the installation of most parts is about the same as the price of the part.

Yup, that's installed, while the 1k price was just the tank. Installing the TF now is much more work, because of the fuel pump adapter that must be made first, and the more complicated wiring on the newer vans.

Re: Larger gas tank & van hood mask?

Transfer Flow recently quoted $1600 for a 46 gal tank, not installed.

How do you know you have 10 gallons left? That's the same story SMB told me, but when I went into limp mode I realized something was up and figured out that by trickle filling I can get 8 extra gallons of diesel in. And by trickle, I mean trickle.

In my 2005 at least E is really E and the "extra" is above F, which will sit pegged for 100 miles after doing the to the brim. How do I know it's full? Well you can fill the filler neck itself and see it. I don't bother with the extra gallons unless I find cheap fuel or it's a desolate area with questionable fill ups.

So its possible you're never putting that 10 gallons in, not that it's going unused in the bottom of your tank.

Larger gas tank & van hood mask?

How do you get transfer flow to quote the price? SMB quoted me 1995 uninstalled. I can just not justify the big bucks. It seems steep given what it takes to make one. Other options??. I really want the extra capacity. Last week I did a float trip in the middle of nowhere Oregon and was worried about the launch trip followed by a long shuttle.

Re: Larger gas tank & van hood mask?

I considered that. However I ran it on limp mode for 90 plus miles and filled up 44 gallons. I could make an argument that you are correct. It seems my diesel stove entrains air at under a quarter tank, not 1/8 tank smb says it should. That is more annoying.

Re: Larger gas tank & van hood mask?

Limp mode for 90 miles is annoying. Limp mode for a mile is awful (well at the time I didn't know what limp mode was...)

I don't know what mpg is for limp either, but that could burn 6-9 gallons for sure. Not to mention that limp mode exists because running your diesel out is a really bad idea- it's one of the few American style warnings I agree with. However if the warning comes 100 miles before you run out, you have no real warning when it's necessary.
