New Tires and Carpet

I replaced my BFG 8 ply tires today after 2 nearly catastrophic on highway blowouts , both were due to heat build up and weight . I knew from the start that this would come to fruition before my BFG 's were worn out and this all came about even though I religiously check my vehicle weights and air pressure's weekly ! I wish they had a 10 ply in the 35" as I have always had great success with these tires , just to much weight for these tires but the good news is I was able to sell them to a Hummer owner for $500.00 for the four remaining tires, off setting the cost of the replacement tires . I also ordered two new replacement carpets one for replacement and the other for Hot Frying Pans that find their way onto the carpet when the Smoke Alarm Sounds .

Re: New Tires and Carpet

Dang it Greggde, now you have put another item on top of my SMB worry list. I've been thinking of going from Load Range D to E tires at some point and that point seems to be rapidly approaching.

A couple of questions;

What do you mean by "nearly" catastrophic blowouts? Was there any warning or signs like rumbling from a partially delaminated tire?

What did you replace your BFGs with?

How many miles did you have on the BFGs?

Re: New Tires and Carpet

I think any blowout that isn't actually catastropihic could be qualified as nearly so in these vehicles. I've had 4 or 5 BFG AT treads separate between my F250 and SMB. I caught them all before an actual blowout and I'm currently a big hater of the BFG brand. I've only stopped one time due to an irregular vibration and had it not be a BFG that had separated. [/rant]

Re: New Tires and Carpet

Ed ,
67 MPH and a large separation blister formed on the right rear inside sidewall . Thankfully my Daughter Felice contacted me on the two way radio with the comment ( Dad there is something strange looking on the right rear tire ) I slowed to a crawl and took the the next off ramp on the California side of the Baker Grade . I am absolutely religious about tire maintenance , rotations at 2,500 miles , pressure checked weekly or less and complete off the Rim rotations at 15,000 miles these tires had 21,000 miles on them and were showing very good tread wear ! I must also note that this is an identical failure to the same side of our EB-50 that occurred at 13,710 miles with the same maintenance in place . The layout of the EB-50 is such that the right side of the SportsMobile is subject to more weight . I really do not find fault with the BFG tires just the available load range that are available on these 17" Rims
I have had great success with these tires when weights were more within reason on previous
4X4 Vans . My guts wrench at the thought of rear blown tire with my Bride and two of my Grandsons inside running down the highway . I have replaced all 5 tires with the
Nitto 35/12.50/17 Mt 10 Ply and immediately noticed the difference in ride and handling .
The good news is that I got $500.00 for the four other BFG's and they are now running down the road on a H1 . I will post a photograph of the failed tire in my gallery
