Re: Penthouse Bolt Replacement - video

Perfect I figured it out thanks a ton! So now I have successfully removed the springs and the tension. I figured since I have everything taken apart it is a good time to replace all the bolts. Pictures to follow. Thanks for the help.

Re: Penthouse Bolt Replacement - video

Are you familiar with the concept of replacing the 1/4-20 bolts with shoulder screws? If you've come this far, you should consider it......shoulder screws will last much longer than the hardware that's presently installed.

No I haven't but I will look into that for sure thanks. Can the same holes be used and what are the dimensions of the shoulder screws I should look for? Thanks

Well, you need 1/4" dia shoulder screws for the stock holes....the pivot bolts are either 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" long I can't remember.....

Re: Penthouse Bolt Replacement - video

So I managed to release the tension spring and replace the bolts. I went with grade 8 bolts and locking nuts since I already had them. One thing I learned is the importance of having friends help you out. Never would of been able to fix it without them.

What about electric lifts?

My left rear bolt broke off. Larrie did a great service by making that video. But his 1989 manual lift is not the same as my 2010 electric. And my RB 50 build has cabinets covering the access to the rear bolt. Is there a post out there showing how to get one like mine apart?

In my EB50 all the hardware is above the closet as far as I know. You can access it by removing screw caps and screws and folding back the carpet. There is a pic in this thread of the passenger side rear uncovered. I realize you're probably working forward of that, but it's all just screws and carpet.

The driver side above the closet is similar, although I think there is a chunk of wood included. Anyway it's mostly empty space over the closet with just carpet covering the structural metal all around the springs and lift etc.

Thank you!

11 years later and this video is still saving peoples butts! Thanks Larry!
something broke in the pop top up yesterday and it’s even while closed, it shoving itself to the driver side, 6 inches over the drip rails.
I suspect that the rear bolt broke but that the spring is still attached to the U Tube.
I’m a little afraid to try to pop it to access repairs. One side of a lift broken side does not seem to want to lift but it is shoving sideways :/

Dorothyt7's passenger pivot bolt broke, and sheared the front bar roof block. In the pic one can see the marks where the bar force sheared the staples. All better, both pivots replaced...Lasted from 95 to now, so locally sourced grade 8 bolts trimmed to length made it pretty quick fix. Interestingly, the bolt broke at a non load or wear contact point...fatigue....The other side bolt looked good tho slightly bent..
Bonus was a link tighter on the spring tension made the top raising a bit spritely..
