Penthouse help!!!

It seems the nut came off the "Pivot "bolt on my PH. The one that holds the two arms in the middle that lets them pivot up or down. The bolt is half way out but stuck in the outer arm, and I can not get the tension off to remove, and replace. Am I missing something here? Thanks for the help...kt

Penthouse help!!!

DO NO PULL OUT THE BOLT. If you do the that side of the penthouse will collapse and you could be injured.

The bolts are always under compression from the two cross members. To relieve the compression you need to raise the top with jacks and block it into position. This may not relive all of the compression but it will help.

The nut came off of mine after I first got it. With mine the bolt was still partway inside the inner tubeI took so I took a hammer and whacked the bolt back through the inner tube till the threads were visible and put a new nut on it. The nut had a nylon insert.

This video, http://vimeo.com/m/61317178, shows how to block the penthouse up to work on the springs and bolts.

That's very sound advice. Beyond the potential for injury you could end up bending the support braces if it collapses. BE CAREFUL!

Re: Penthouse help!!!

I know why the nut came off mine. The bolt is too short to contact the nylon part of the nyloc. I found a shorter nut at Ace called an all metal lock nut which is thinner. They all had various locking power so I tried a bunch and picked the best

Penthouse help!!!

Glad you found the "real" problem and that it was an easy fix. So many times what I thought was he problem has turned out to be something much simpler.

Re: Penthouse help!!!

I will wait until next year to say it is fixed. I have only put it up and down a couple of times since changing the nut. It was really fun getting the bolt back through. I should have mentioned to get it to align up I needed to tweak the penthouse. I was by myself and I couldn't bang on the bolt and push on the penthouse so I parked on a side hill and let gravity move the penthouse so the bolt would line up enough so I could bang it back through.

Re: Penthouse help!!!

You can use locktite instead, or use locktite also.
