I installed Yakima tracks on my PH roof a while back......I attempted to get the holes outside of the canvas but found that the tracks would be way out toward the edge of the roof...and as mentioned the roof gets skinnier at the rear, which makes things even trickier.

Since the PH top was off and headliner was out I just located the tracks where I wanted them and drilled..and used sealing washers with the fasteners. It's been a few years, no leaks.

Yep ^^^, it's difficult and the SMB top is no more square than the rest of an E-series van.

I built my rack out of square tubing after giving up on rounding up all the Yakima part$ but still I had to just mount it with holes inside the canvas in the end. No problems with it.

I've got one of the rails on and it looks pretty good. Did everyone drill all the holes on the track? 11 holes per track seems like overkill

On the tracks I took off mine 7 of the 11 holes were used and drilled. Tracks are ~72" long.
