Re: Rust Treatment - Under body - Wheel wells

I've used POR-15 in a few rust spots and to treat the inside of fuel tanks. Worked great in both instances. They make good products. I'm not sure it's worth it for minor surface rust as that's going to happen to most untreated (underbody) metal and really doesn't hurt anything. It does turn rust into a (supposedly) inert product and therefore won't rust anymore. I'd also go easy on the leaf springs as they need to slide on each other and I don't know what this, or other, products will do there. Twas me, and I do a LOT of Baja beaches, I'd treat the areas where the rust is getting to be more then minor surface stuff and keep an eye on the rest. The only guaranteed way to stop rust it to totally remove it (I.E. sandblast) and then cover (waterproof) the shiny bright metal. Tough to do. Undercoating is an option, but adds weight and if you ever have to work on the treated area, you'll curse the day you did it.

Have you heard of Rust Bullet?
http://www.rustbullet.com/?source=adwor ... 5QodOT79_Q

I just ordered some myself yesterday so can't speak to it's effectiveness yet but read a lot of positive reviews on the tubes of the internet.

If anyone's interested I'll report back.

Mr. Wilson - how did you end up dealing with this problem ? I am currently looking at a van that has some rust - it doesn't appear to be malignant yet but I would like to mitigate any further rusting - so what worked for you?

Re: Rust Treatment - Under body - Wheel wells

Please excuse me if I jump in here Mr Wilson.
I had the same problem of surface rust when I bought my van. I've been using a product called Rust Bullet and am quite happy with it.
In this picture it looks white but it's actually silver.

If you plan on using it be sure to read ALL the instructions and wear the appropriate gear. If it gets on your skin you'll be wearing it for a while.

Since it is silver, beside the rust proofing, it will also act as a radiant barrier against road heat so I used it inside the wheel wells. I think it gives the van a distinctive look. But maybe that's just me

Re: Rust Treatment - Under body - Wheel wells

what did you do for rust removal?

this is what i might be working with:

http://picasaweb.google.com/EmersonHasbrouck/SMB#

(can't seem to get the images to size correctly - might be because they were downloaded from an email........)

Also what do you think about the rust in these pictures is it something I should be worried about? - It was a bit more then I was hoping to see but not sure if it is enough to sour me on the deal.

This is Veg Head's rig - I am wondering what you all think about it ? Is the price right?

thanks for your input.........

I didn't see anything worse in those pictures than normal surface rust. I wouldn't let that worry you.
If you saw something like this, then you should worry.

With Rust Bullet you just wire brush off the loose scale and paint over the rest.
I'll let others speak about the van price. Your best bet is to start another thread with just that question.

Re: Rust Treatment - Under body - Wheel wells

For light surface rust, a good pressure washing and some rattle can rust inhibitor paint would probably suffice. Just re-shoot every year since road debris will wear some of it off. Cost ~$20

Re: Rust Treatment - Under body - Wheel wells

Clean/spray the underside, apply RustOleum hammered finish.
Re-apply as needed. It's cheap and simple.

This is pretty much what i did
my detail guy took to drive thru car wash

then used a primer and then a black finish
dont know what he used will find out

i think the RustOleum one product will be just fine

This was done on XXXX

As i just got out of shop at Full Tilt Off Road to repair my accident
Larry mentioned something like Wow, underbelly is in great shape

My limited visual inspection also concures that i stopped the rust

Carwash, paper jumpsuit, goggles, 6+ cans of spray and a couple of hours should do the trick for stopping the surface rot, me thinks
