It seems a ladder would be much better then a latter. Any issues with catching it on things on the trail?

There pretty tough. Been in some tight rocky places and haven't had to pull either one off yet

So far, yes, but I haven't field tested it yet. Anyway, I've thought of a way to improve and simplify it which should also make it more stable. More to come.

Cool idea, Scotty! How well does that grill stove work? I've thought about buying one if those, but they get mixed reviews online.

Fantastic. It's the best one I've ever had. I like to save space and this is good enough for 6 burgers/chicken at a time if you can live with one stove eye. The newer style ones look different than mine BTW, and these things are pretty cheap too.

What about heat and the paint on the van? Any issues? The gap between the ladder and the body is probably plenty to dispate the heat, but I'm curious if could be an issue.

I like the idea... Genius actually, and saves me from buying a goor galley.

Well, not quite genius I'm afraid . More like a Tennessee engineering if you look closely.

Thanks though. I have my ladder off since I just fixed my raingutter rust issues so I haven't field tested it yet. I'm letting the paint cure, then I'm gonna build it a little better once my ladder is back on. To answer your question though, I have no worries about heat. That stove can sit on a wooden picnic table with plastic dishes, etc. right behind it and nothing ever gets hot. For comparison sake, I was recently having my exhaust system installed and I asked this old-school muffler guy how much clearance I needed between the tailpipe and the rear transferflow tank. He said 1/8 inch is the standard minimum. I have a couple inches at least but that really surprised me. Apparently not very much space is needed for heat dissipation.

nixed this idea of hanging my stove from the ladder, for now anyway. Here's the perfect solution.



I just removed my water and gas cans from the top of my generator box and the stove fits perfect. It's a little high so I just stand on my door step-stool while using the stove. Takes about 10 seconds to set up. Also, this is not an all the time solution. I've just been looking for a way to use my stove when I'm boondocking or don't have the luxury of a picnic table.

We use one of these. It rolls up very compact. Many times we set up under a tree or near a fire ring, which may not be right next to the van.
