"I've noticed a klunk in my SMB 4x system "

I had a metal on metal "feeling" when on rough trails. Not sure I would characterize it as a "klunk" though. I mentioned it when I had my SMB at SMB West a month or so ago. They found that the front sway bar was having contact with part of the frame. It was right near one of the bends on either side of the main straight section of the sway bar. They ground back the offending area on the frame (or bracket??). I unfortunately haven't had a chance to get off-road since to verify if it fixed it or not.

May be something to look at.

Phil

Ah nothing like considering the finer points of the definition of klunk.

It actually is more of a sound and only happens on the passenger side. It happened a few times on my Denver trip just driving around and I was looking for something broken or disconnected when I noticed the bump stop seems to be pushed to the side where it would go past the axle instead of on it.

Also, I have noticed rather hard front end action when hitting a major bump or dip at speed on pavement. I realized today that was likely because of the bumpstops bottoming out.

waiting for user feedbacks of other 4x4 system?
curious as to whether this is a smb design flaw or just the nature of the van?

As a Quigley 4x4 owner, I've always drooled for the SMB 4x4 front end suspension, axle and diff setup..

Especially the DaynaTrac PROROCK 60 setup..

Is that PIC showing 2 inches of travel valid for all new SMB 4x4 coming from the factory? Tell me it ain't So, Bro...

On my modified Quigley setup with Supercoils from Supersprings with cut-in-half Quigley Bump stops.. 3+ inches before it hits the bumpstop pads.

Wonder how much clearance travel Buji has on his Salem-Kroger Modded Big Arm setup..

NRL:
what was the vertical travel prior to the new coil springs?
was you horizontal cross bar/beam notched out to fit the quigley system?

Bump stops

I had my front springs rearched for a inch more travel... Now I've got about

2.5 inches. If I bottom out now I'am doing something dumb... Those

hydraulic bumpstops are really nice... but very hard to install correctly.

My Quigley 4x4 with the bumper and stock springs had about 1inch of travel! It was sad.. and I wanted it completely redone (like the Big Arms that Salem Kroger uses).

Totally different now with the Supercoils. I'm actually quite content the way it is now. Haven't hit that bump stop in all the same places I know it used to hit.

We replaced the stock Quigley springs with SuperCoils from Supersprings. There is two models, both rated at 3inches taller, one rated at 3000lbs and that other like 5000 lbs. I think the other conversion rating was like (150lbs more and 300lbs more). The 5000lbs spring (300lbs more weight) was rated for a snow plow.
I went for the 3000lbs (150lbs more) springs.

When I ordered it I had no idea if it was going to work out since I needed something for that heavy custom bumper (1/4 inch Steel bumper).
Weighs about 110lbs w/o the winch so the stock Quigley springs (really a Ford part) needed to be replaced.

The DIY install went pretty smooth in a afternoon. We used a Harbor Freight 8 Ton Long Ram Jack ($40.00) to lift the front right under the frame rail in the front, lifted each side worked on first. Unscrewed the bolt/c clamp on top of the spring and the big bolt on the bottom of the spring, wiggled it a bit and the spring came right out. Didn't even have to remove the wheels..

I had one shop quoted $450 before I took a closer look at getting the spring out myself (err.. me and my Buddy).
The outside shop said they would need a tool to compress it and all that which was a not even true in my case.

I also had Firestone Air Bags before the swap so it took a little longer to vacuum pump the air out of the Air Bags that were in the old springs. Takes long because you have to squeeze till it shrinks up so you can get it out of the spring.
Then transferring it shrunken into the other new spring and letting the air in so it shrinks back to normal size. Then to their recommend 11psi.

The Airbags currently are there but don't have alot of air in them (5psi). But at 5psi, it's there if it ever needs it..

Here's some more pics:
