Sunburned Penthouse Top Part Deux

Earlier in the year, I mentioned that the clear coat on my PHT was peeling off in what looked like a sunburn. That was probably about 40ish percent of the top. Now its probably like 80% of the top. The clear coat flakes away easily with water sprayed on it. After I washed the van, I began drying the top -- and on the rag I noticed what looked like tan paint. Although I couldnt tell if it was actually smearing the paint off, I checked numerous times with a different rag to see if I really was wiping off Paint. Aside from this issue, there are a few stress cracks right on the edges of the grooves on the top of the PHT. I'm feeling the need to take it by SMB, but It seems to be a pain in the Arse to do that. I'm wondering if I take it there would they seal the cracks and then recoat the top? Is it better to just seal the cracks then go with LineX on top? I'm kinda torn between going with a TAN lineX color or just black. Myself, like adventureduo, like the TAN and black look -- but im not sure how a black linex top would look. I might have to test it out on photoshop a bit. Also -- if I decide to go with lineX -- would it be better to take it to SMB so they can remove the bolts and the PHT structural bars Or should I just do it locally down here.

Do you think this is regular wear and tear or is this something that SMB should take care of?

Joe

The warranty is against leakage, not uglyness.

I think a good paint shop that can strip and paint the fiberglass would be the ticket, but unless it's leaking or structurally damaged it sounds like a cosmetic issue.

There is a place locally called http://chipmagic.biz that does fiberglass and paint (not a full bodyshop), a place like that is what I'm thinking of.

A black top might look good, but will get smoking hot in the sun. Good in the winter, but unless you live at the north pole in the summer....

Joe, call around some of the marine repair shops in San Diego. It is a fiberglass top and has a lot of the same characteristics as a boat. I completely agree with Scatter that you should avoid a black top.

Ours is peeling, but nearly as bad as yours... but when the time comes (probably early next year) i want to LineX the roof tan if possible. I think black would look cool, but may generate too much heat in the desert sun and bake us.
