Who here has had to replace their diesel fuel pump?

10 days and counting to Baja. Nagging concern is now my fuel pump ('03 7.3 PSD). Not having any problems, but considering whether I should invest in a pump to bring along just in case. I've burned through a heck of a lot of money getting the van ready for this trip, so I'd rather not spend $300 +/- for a fuel pump if I can help it. So, with that, who has had to change their electrical fuel pump on their Ford? If you had to do that, approx how many miles did your rig have at the time? Thanks.

To narrow it down, any F or E series Ford with the in-line (frame rail mount) for the 7.3 ('99-2003). I just ordered one off Ehell for only $175 (new Motorcraft) which is $125 cheaper than Rockauto (which is the cheapest by far, the ebay deal notwithstanding). Even though I'm getting a new pump to carry around, I'd still like to know if anyone has had their's fail. I've heard of 250k without a problem, but that seems like a rare deal to me. Trying to determine an average.

Also, does anyone know which tools (specifically) are needed for the fuel line quick disconnects? Thanks.

Never had issues with mine but I did replace it at 180k miles when I did my WVO conversion. I paid $75 for a Bosch direct replacement (same pump at Ford) and it's going strong. I see them listed on Amazon, model #69136 for $80

While I have a gas motor, I've had three fuel pumps fail, one when I was within half a day of heading deep into Death Valley's back country. I now carry a spare, lots of tools,a couple jacks and wood blocks so I can drop the tank if needed. I also carry plenty of other spare parts, just in case. Last month, I lost a coil within the first couple hours of a trip into the wilderness. Fortunately, I had a spare and within an hour I was back on the road. Spare parts are cheap, remote tow's are not.
