You gell'n?

Wow. That blew big time. Down around -6. Farm store did not have enough additive in their diesel. I gelled up (well, actually, probably only clouded up, but when that happens wax (parafin) builds up on the filter plugging it). Eventually got some friends to bring me some anti-gel, injector cleaner/lube stuff (CR). Temps up around 15, and with the anti-gel added, I eventually got going down the road with only one more plugging incident (short lived). So, I recommend you not rely on your diesel supplier to make sure they have their additives up to snuff when it comes to winter diesel (unless yo live in the artic-like Mid-west or in Jage's stomp'n grounds). A bottle of diesel additive goes a long way and is cheap insurance. Guessing you all already know this, but thought I'd share my miserable experience so other's don't have to. On the up side, the farm store gave me a new Wix fuel filter, which ain't cheap.

Thanks for the info.

At what temps does this become a concern? I'm regularly in sub 20deg temps with the SMB and have never experienced any trouble. Sometimes I remember to add a cold temp fuel additive, but not always.

Lots of discussion regarding gel/filter plug temp points on the web. Sounds like winter fuel should be good to -5. BD gets cloudy at temps relatively close to 32. Some anti gels treat you good to approx -45 or so. Once you gel, its more work to get you back on the road (pulling/replacing filter, etc). Damn I don't miss North Dakota and this recent weather, among other things, reminds me why.
