4D battery question/Which one?

Hello everyone. I have a beautiful 2003, 7.3l SMB with only 59,000 miles, that unbelievably, still has the oringal big battery, 4D house battery. While it still works fine, I am getting concerned about its age and am thinking about preventatively replacing it. The Lifeline battery is very pricey, but having lasted as long as it has, it may be worth it. NAPA makes a 4D which is significantly cheaper, so doe Interstate. Which battery have people used with good success? Is the Lifeline worth the extra expense? Any input would be appreciated. Cheers all! Fernando Rivero

Re: 4D battery question/Which one?

Hard to beat a Lifeline but Deka is a good brand. The only 4-D AGM battery I know where people have had issues has been the Universal brand AGM SMB is using these days but the problems could have been owner/user problem. I'd venture to say battery maintenance is the culprit of battery failure more than the company. But well made batteries survive poor maintenance better than cheaper brands according to the experts. Also most battery companies make high and low end batteries. You kinda get what you pay for. You might look at Concorde Sun Xtender battery which is a cheaper version of the Lifeline. Pretty much a lifeline w/o the warranty. Other top of the line batteries beside Lifeline are those by Surrette and Odyssey but you'll pay for them as well. Companies like Interstate and Trojan make a good battery.

Re: 4D battery question/Which one?

Conventional wet cell batteries are much less expensive than AGM. No love for them on this site, but we had a generic deep cycle battery last 3 years with no maintenance on our old van. On our current van the batteries need to be removed for any service, and they're mounted on their side, so AGM was a must.
