Adding Cruise Control

My van (2011) did not come with cruise control. I inquired at the dealership about adding it when I was having some warranty work done, and they told me it was not possible.

A few years ago I converted my '71 Bronco to fuel injection and added cruise control to that---- which leads me to believe it ought to be possible with my van.

What am I missing? Has anyone done this?

Re: Adding Cruise Control

I'm pretty surprised if it's not possible. I would think it's as easy as finding the parts off a van (your year) with it and mounting it up. Good luck, I'm curious too.

That was my plan… but the dealer made me pause…. I wonder what I don't know.

Re: Adding Cruise Control

It could be that van models with factory cruise control use a different wiring harness that cannot easily be swapped out. I encountered a situation like this when wanting to add a feature found on the Canadian model but not the US model of my Honda Element.

What make and model van do you have? People could probably give more specific answers if they had this information.

Re: Adding Cruise Control

My wife bought a 2009 Aveo that did not have cruise. She was able to have it added at a third party shop. You may be able get one at a shop that does alarm installations.

Re: Adding Cruise Control

I think all you need is the steering wheel with buttons, and enabling cruise control in the PCM. Since drive by wire came out, the buttons are the only mechanical difference between vans with and without cruise.

Add-on aftermarket cruise control systems will not work because of drive-by-wire.

Agreed! IIRC from '05 forward CC or as Ford calls it "vehicle speed control" should be readily available from any dealer as a complete kit-----perhaps call other local dealers?

Also IIRC a local specialist with this sort of factory add on install quoted me a price of $800 complete. He's the best known and very well respected in my local area, have worked with him on another CC install so this can't be an impossible task at all.

For reference purposes only this is/was the Ford part number for the '05/'06 CC kit: 5C2Z-9A818-AAA. "9A818" in that p/n points parts guys to cruise control systems--from there its an easy find for your year/model and build date--have the VIN ready.

Re: Adding Cruise Control

I added cruise control to my 2007 E350 with a kit from M&R electronics. It is basically just a new steering wheel with the buttons built in.After installing it you have to take to a dealer to have the cruise feature turned on in the PCM.The kit was about $400 and the dealer about $100.All in all it was pretty easy.

Was that a Ford kit or aftermarket?

Re: Adding Cruise Control

It was a Ford kit sourced from the supplier who supplies Ford.
