One thing I've always liked about BMWs and the road tractors I drive at work are the red ambient lights that provide just enough lighting at night to see what's going on around the front seats/console. I had a marine red LED fixture in my last van but it was way too bright.
Since LEDs strips are so cheap I tried this:
Four 11" long red LED strips from Amazon ($6.99)

One old plastic license plate
One toggle switch
First, a license plate is exactly as long as these lights, so I volunteered a black plastic (car dealership) one I had.
Any thin plastic or something like a license plate slides perfectly under the PH trim between the front seats
Most of these lights come with an adhesive backing, so stick in place
Run a wire to power through a toggle switch. I did this right above the passenger seat's head and borrowed power from the bullet light next to it for convenience. My wife will use this much more than me so I wanted it to be more convenient for her than on my side, and I can still reach it pretty easily.
Here it is in place, albeit in daylight.
Here's the finished product at night, which I realize is basically a useless pic. What it shows is that the light provides a little light and not much, which was precisely the idea. I have yet to road test it but so far it works perfectly.
