Geofff: I hear you on wanting a GPS close to line of sight to the road, but couldn't mount it where you indicated due to gear shift interferance. Was also concerned about the thing pulling out on rough roads as mentioned by Adventureduo. The dash is plastic and putting a backing plate behind it would make it a real hassle to pull the dash in the future. (At least on my '07) The mount on the console is straight up and down and therefore no lever/moment arm for vibration to pull the mount off. At least I hope not. Haven't been on washboards since the install.
Wesel123's mount in that area looks great, but the Baja is a larger and heavier unit. To clear the gearshift it would block more of the windshield then I wanted.
On the antenna, I was going to mount it under the hood (it's fiberglas so won't block the signal) but was worried about all the heat under there. Anyone with a diesel knows what I mean. I ended up mounting the antenna on the roof just behind where the penthouse hits the roof. That way it's out of sight when the penthouse is down, gets some weather protection, and is all the way up top so nothing should block the signal. Took a while and small amounts of blood to feed the wire above the headliner and down the left windshield post, but I like it and it works fine.
I guess I will have to hold my drink in my crotch cause my wife sez she NEEDS three cup holders and if I want to cover up mine, that's my problem.

Here's where i mounted it up. It's hard to tell in the pics.. but you can use the touch screen head unit perfectly and see the screen perfect. They're staggered like movie theater seating (couldn't think of a better example). I didn't lose any cupholders either.

The position is perfect for both passenger and driver view.

I couldn't find a good place for the antenna and i hate tearing apart interiors.. so i didn't want to take the overhead portion out for the roof. So i just mounted it to the front bumper.
