Battery wiring

I recently did some electrical work. Replace old inverter charger as I thought it was not working.
Starting batteries were dead 1 1/2 years old. As I replaced with new ( Diehard platinum) I am wondering about how they are wired with the house battery. Basically the two starting batteries are wired in parrellel, with a ground wire running to the house battery. I noticed the ground from the Prosine does not run to the house battery, but up to the starting battery under the hood. Can someone explain why the batteries are hooked up this way?

Thanks

Re: Battery wiring

2001 might be an Isolator instead of a separator, so that the alternator charge goes to the house batteries but the house systems don't drain the starter. I haven't ever seen one of those, so perhaps that is the correct wiring?

Alternatively, negative is negative is negative, so perhaps it doesn't matter, except that with them... hmm, would it disconnect both batteries if you pulled the combined negative? Maybe a safety feature, whereas in mine if one negative is not disconnected there is still power on that side.
