Blue Sea 7622 Doesn’t like my House Battery Ground

So it looks like the Blue Sea 7622 that I just installed over the weekend doesn’t like the Ground connection for the House battery. It’s currently connected to the wheel well. whoever installed it didn’t strip the paint of the wheel well where the terminal connect in order to get a better connection to the body. The other side(driver side) where there is also a ground connection was stripped of the paint to ensure a proper connection. I confirmed this by connecting a jumper cable from the starter battery negative post to the House battery negative post and the ACR switched on when starting the van.

I need to figure what I need to do to resolve this. Should I just reground the House battery to the frame by drilling a hole in the floor of the van to the frame? Or try stopping off some of the paint at the wheel well for a better connection.

Question before I start drilling holes in the floor: Anyone else running the Blue Sea ACR with the house battery grounded to the wheel well?

Your best solution is to run a dedicated copper ground wire all the way to the start battery negative cable (either end is fine) Steel frames, fenders and body panels are poor conductors which can result in voltage loss, less than full charges and longer charge times. There ok for small loads like light bulbs, but the voltage loss when charging batteries is more significant.

Thanks,
Does Cable gauge matter as much for the ground as it does for the Positive leads?

I used 2AWG for both Main battery and House battery to ACR connections.

Yes, the same amount of current flows in the ground cable as the positive cable, so you want the same gauge. In addition, the bigger the wire, the less voltage drop (resistance), so you get better / faster re-charging. This might help.

Personally I prefer braided ground straps, but if you live in an area where they salt the roads they make not be the best choice.

I agree, for short ground jumpers, such as the start battery to the engine block. What I advocate for long house battery ground wires though, is the same gauge, stranded copper wire for both conductors. (both properly sized for the alternator output and fused on the + side) Braided straps would work fine for the ground, but would likely be quite expensive.
