Car PC Auto PC

Has anyone had experience installing a Car/Auto PC with a touchscreen?
I am looking at this rugged system
http://store.mo-co-so.com/complete22...tem-p-221.html
With a Xenarc TouchScreen Monitor http://www.xenarc.com/product/index-monitor.html

I know I can just as easily bring my laptop or tablet pc but I was thinking of something more rugged and that could draw less/require less power.

I could have the flexibilty of running different Mapping/GPS programs depending on where I am and what level of detail I want. Also, running any windows PC software. I am into GIS Mapping using ESRI ArcGIS and Photo Geotagging.

I really like the Centrafuse Car PC software http://www.fluxmedia.net/ It is on sale now for $125 wow that is a great price.
The Car PC/Auto PC can interface with the SMB http://store.mo-co-so.com/elm327usb-p-163.html

Maybe it is just overkill to dream/envision about a system like that. Currently, I just have the factory stereo and a Garmin GPS ( I share this with my other vehicles and my wife's car)

The other thing I really want to add to this setup is the Kyocera Mobile Router http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/kr2-router/ -- insert a USB Cellular Modem from a Mobile phone company and share the connection. I like it better than the MiFi Type and other like it since it has a built in Firewall and has a Lan Connection to internet from a Campground or your house and A VPN Passthrough (I can connect to work) It has Fail-over capabilities for use as a conventional router with wireless EV-DO as a backup.
and is fully Compatible with Cable/DSL Modems
Another thing that is cool you can get a antenna booster -- I like the Hawkings Technologies
15db antenna booster. http://www.hawkingtech.com/products/...=58&ProdID=152 I can be very far away from SMB like at a picnic table and use my desktop replacement notebook pc to do some work or trip planning

I plan on adding a backup camera to the system. http://www.tadibrothers.com/shop/pro...cat=317&page=1(Only wish wiring them was easy, I don't like the wireless ones since the signal is not as clear and it gets interuppted by other wireless devices)
The Monitor/Screen supports AV Inputs (RCA)

Re: Car PC Auto PC

I have a carputer in my van see my post below. I have been running Streetdeck but also use Roadrunner/riderunner with Garmin PC for mapping.

You may want to look at the viliv_x70, not much bigger then the touchscreen.

Re: Car PC Auto PC

You might consider this touchscreen which looks to be half the price:
7" touch screen $150
http://www.mini-box.com/VM7000-7-touchscreen

I did a little price comparison with newegg. Comes out about $660 verses $800 which is not too bad. Unless you consider the upgrades you could do like a 500 gb hard drive for $50 more?
http://store.mo-co-so.com/complete226gh ... p-221.html
Enclosure $80
http://www.mini-box.com/VoomPC-Enclosur ... tegory=101
Power supply $80
http://www.mini-box.com/M2-ATX-160w-Int ... tegory=101
25W Socket P Core 2 Duo 2.26 $220
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product
Jetway NF93 $200
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... otherboard
2 gb memory$30
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820220281
Hard drive 160 gb $50
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... rd%20drive

I'm currious for the money is it just easier and cheaper to buy a high amp dc computer and a netbook for the front? Guess that would mean no touch screen? And you probably can't whip into an all in one machine like Scalf77 sweet looking system.

Re: Car PC Auto PC

I use a ruggedized tablet in mine. Waterproof to 15' and dust and vib proof too. Has Wi-Fi and a Cell modem. I have a USB DVD-rom for that if needed.

Runs my GPS and i-tunes just fine and as it has a solid state drive off road does not matter. I also use the same tablet on my motorcycle.
