The various amps have different gain and larger antennas have more gain than smaller ones. IIRC my little 4G amp is 12db and the larger 3G amp is 20db....and the tiny 4G antenna is 3db-4db and the larger antenna is 5-6db. For every 3db increase in gain the signal doubles.
You sound like you have dabbled in Ham Radio.
