Connecting Solar Panels to Inverter Charger
I have a 1998 Ford E250 SMB with 2 house batteries and an AIMS 1500 Watt Inverter Charger (modified sine wave). As a side note, I've replaced all of the incandescent and flourescent lights to LED.
I purchased a 180W ZAMP portable solar system with integrated MPPT controller that will be connected to my van through a port in the side of the van. I also purchased an AIMS 600W inverter charger (pure sine wave). I switched to the pure sine wave inverter because I understand a modified sine wave controller can be harmful to sensitive electronics such as computers. I downsized to the 600W because I just won't be using power hogs such as coffee pot, microwave, dvd player or TV.
Question. The ZAMP installation instructions state that, when hooking up to a 2 battery system, attach the positive lead to the positive terminal of the nearest battery and attach the negative lead to the negative terminal of the farthest battery. I'm assuming this is the way the existing inverter charger is connected to the batteries (I will verify this). So, would it be acceptable to attache the solar panel port leads to the negative and positive terminals of the inverter charger? It seems if I attach the solar leads to the battery terminals (which the inverter charger is also connected to, it would be the same thing.
Thanks in advance.
