I have an older doghouse, and not as much room. I also want to use the complete male pole and mount assy from the Subaru, and just use a female floor post in the van.

Re: Considering IPad for Van

Ok sorry didn't catch the details.
Could you mount the pole on the right side of the dog house out of the way of the swivel?
would it be to far away to be able to manipulate from the driver side?

If I mounted it to the doghouse, even with a short female pole, it would be WAY too tall with the existing male pole.

So it has to be mounted to the floor. The options are:

1) http://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-ford-e ... -base.html
a) somehow mount to passenger seat, but out of the way of the chair swiveling OR
b) somehow adapt/modify seat bracket to fit driver's seat

2) http://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-tele-p ... -base.html
bolt 19" female post directly to floor (starting to think this is best option but requires drilling 4 holes in floor) - but in a place that doesn't block the doghouse removal

Re: Considering IPad for Van

I have a Galaxy Tab
(we have a iPad also, too big IMHO, when mounted)
refurb paid $150

7 inch / doesnt hog up space

also IMHO
the iPad is a great devise, but two handed
my Tab is a one hander

dont have it mounted
nor have i played w/ the maps

Wilson has a Nuvi 430(??) 4.x" screen

After HOURS downloading stuff on the nuvi

i have found on 2 two week trips, AAA maps work best for us

still like my Nuvi, i can plan driving time to next spot and mark them
to repeat

I am just old school and like maps and looking where i am driving :)

Re: Considering IPad for Van

I spent 4 days roaming around north death valley last month and used a new Motion X-GPS HD app on the iPad for navigation.

This version has features designed for off the grid exploration and it was terrific. This app puts yet another knife into Garmin.

Prior to the trip I downloaded detailed maps of the entire area and was able to use them perfectly without any cell signal. This app also lets you import GPS track files (*.gdb or *.gpx) and waypoints.

I think it cost something like $5.
