Considering IPad for Van

I've been looking for a device that will allow me to have street GPS with turn by turn directions, maps for off-roading, and video input all in one so that I don't have more than one monitor clogging up the space in my van. Doesn't seem to be an all in one device out there with all three capabilities so I'm beginning to research using an IPad for this. Looks like if I install a mobile wireless router I might be able to find the cameras that will work. Just beginning my research on this but was wondering if anyone in the forum has used their IPad as the screen for their backup camera(s) and if you could steer me in the right direction as to where to acquire them.

Thanks,

Bill S.

I've since added the Garmin North America which works without a cell signal as the maps are already loaded in the Pad or Phone. 1.5gb download took forever.

The Garmin works whether I have any "bars" or not.

If you have the 3G version of the iPad, then it has built in GPS as well. So, you do not need a 3G or WIFI signal to use the iPad as a GPS.

I have CoPilot Live on our iPad. It also downloads all the maps so it takes up a lot of space. I've been very happy with it so far.

I'm still trying to figure out a clean and unobtrusive way to mount my iPad in the SMB.

Who needs GPS? I just hand Sherri the set of paper maps and then yell "Where the hell are we?", every few minutes.

No - not really. We have an old garmin hand held with maps. Works in the van and I can carry it with me to find the van again when I walk out of sight of it. You wouldn't think an old land surveyor could get lost so easily but I do it all the time.

Are, are, are you insinuating my installation isn't "clean and unobtrusive"?

Where's my "foe" button?

I do not believe I've seen your installation. I'm innocent until proven guilty

Sorry. Still a bit sensitive for being slammed by J****y for one of the videos I tried to share with friends. Scroll down a bit: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=6049&hilit=ipad+gps&start=15

If I put my 3G iPad on Airplane mode (no WiFi, no 3G), it can't find it's location in Maps. That matches my memory of one of Steve Jobs' goals when the requirement came out to include a GPS feature for cell phones for 911 purposes...don't include a GPS in any iPhone (or iPad) and come up with another solution which is software driven, not hardware driven. So, I e-mailed a friend of mine who is on the iPad team at Apple (he developed the feature which turns the iPad from Portrait to Landscape mode) and he responded:

"The claim is actually wrong. Location services either makes use of WiFi or 3G to determine location. If you have neither infrastructure available, it won't know where you are."
