DC Motor Help Needed

Trying to diagnose why the smoke came out of my ExtremeAir 12v compressor motor. I expected the pump to be seized, but it was fine.

It's obvious it's been hot--the wiring is melted. Trying to check the condition of the armature. Is there supposed to be continuity here:

and not here?

Anything special about the wires that run from one brush to its partner--there are 4 total? They are melted and I was going to replace them.

All I've found was that the motor was not well grounded to the van. Will that cause failure?

TIA
Z

Re: DC Motor Help Needed

ya it would impede the current so replace and run it.

So there should NOT be continuity in either place?

Re: DC Motor Help Needed

You have a shorted armature. The only fix is a rewind.

Contact George at Extreme. I put his contact info below. I don't think he'd mind, he seems intent on having satisfied users of his product. He was very helpful when I rebuilt mine.

Re: DC Motor Help Needed

Car headlights are actually devices that suck in darkness, convert it into smoke and store in in various expensive electrical devices. When it leaks out the device dies.
