Also, if you need to add things to the fridge such as beer or sodas leave them outside overnight and then put them into the fridge. They will cool off some on their own and not require as much energy.

I hope this isn't too obtuse, I know not-a-thing about this topic.....

Would a smallish generator like one of Honda's offerings not be a good take-along item for this trip?

dumb battery consumption question

Thanks everyone for all the great info. This is the first time that I've been able to get the wife to go off grid. My biggest concern was the fridge so I think I'll be safe and just heat up water for coffee. I did like the old school percolator and dragging the Keurig to the bath house ideas. If I can get her to do some more "out of the ordinary" camping then I will invest in some solar or a small generator. Thanks for all the help.

Another coffee solution since you are coffee "roughing it" could be the Starbucks instant with propane heated water....we use that if we are in a morning rush...

BTW, Chaco is a really cool place to camp. The CG is fairly small, and you are so far back there that the park doesn't get a whole lot of traffic, even during the day. One of my favorite places that we visited on our cross-country trip.
