Electrical Upgrade 2002 7.3L diesel SMB

I want to upgrade my 2002 EB350 7.3 Diesel electrical system. Currently have inverter, one AGM 4D housebattery (dead I suspect), two new starting batteries, and a battery selector switch the prior owner installed but couldn't remember which setting was which (i.e., 1=start, 2=house, etc).

I read that SMB has now gone to a Sure Power battery separator 315-200 rather than the isolator that was installed in 2002. Appreciate any comments on what you would do.

I would definitely get the new separator. It 'protects' both batteries and works without user effort. Also good if you're parked for a long time with solar.

You could try to resurrect your old house battery if you think it's dead due to sulfate buildup on the electrodes. A pulse charger can actually "fix" a bad battery that has this issue (but not fix it due to other issues).

My favorite is the PowerPulse, see

http://pulsetech.com/

These guys resurrected a ton of batteries that were "dead" in a shipping yard in Kuwait for the military. The Marines are planning on putting solar pulses on every single HMMWV they have after their evaluation testing showed that it helped extend battery life on their vehicles.

Also, read the "Testimonials" section on this page:

There are other pulse chargers on the market as well, so perhaps others have some additional input?

Pulse charger

Thank! Compelling argument; however, the least expensive device sold by PulseTech costs more than one 4D AGM. Maybe best approach is new AGM + their new charger wired to house battery circuit? I will look for auto electrical shops that have pulse chargers.

On the price... really? It wasn't a charger, but I got a Powerpulse module (as opposed to the solarpulse). It basically hooks up to the battery (house), uses the battery's own energy to charge up a capacitor, and then pulses back to the battery to remove sulfate layering. Of course, left alone, it will drain the battery... so you have to be plugged in to shore power and have solar to ensure that it works and doesn't drain you out. I got if for under $40.

You might want to just call the company and ask what they recommend. They mainly sell to fleet managers and the govt, so they may have something much more suited to your price range. I'm not saying this will solve your problem necessarily, but it might be worth a try.

I upgraded from the Sure Power to a Blue Sea 400 amp model with an overide switch. I wrote about it, search for Blue Sea would probably turn it up.
