extension cord for 12V wiring?

This is definitely in the DIY category, but since it is electrical I figured it fits here a bit better.

Is there any reason I shouldn't use extension cord (110V) for running 12V DC current? A certain gauge wire is a certain gauge, correct? I've got some cords that need retiring (12 GA, so plenty heavy) and am thinking that it would be perfect for supplying power to my overhead reading lights since the wires are so well protected already. The extra bulk doesn't really concern me as it will be running the perimeter of the roofline behind the frame members.

It should not be a problem as long as you stay within the wires limits concerning load and loss. In the FAQ's about battery problems, are links to a number of calculators that cover a variety of electrical/solar/battery issues. It's located at the bottom of the page.

Rockbender, daveb is correct here. You should have no problems as long as you check the calcs re load and distance. I'm sure 12ga will do most everything you need for accessories. No good for main battery runs as the tables will show.
