Factory trailer wiring

I assume SMB leaves the trailer wiring harness in the "factory towing package" wired to the truck battery even when a 4D house battery is installed. Is that correct? How difficult is it to rewire the harness to the house battery? Any reason why this shouldn't be done? Thanks, RD

Re: Factory trailer wiring

You're talking about specifically the + 12 volt hot wire only?

Re: Factory trailer wiring

jage: I don't really know what the heck I'm talking about but when I get my new small trailer I would like to leave it on the vehicle sometimes and have the lights, small air cond. draw from the house battery. Do I have to modify the wiring? (hitch wiring) THANKS

Re: Factory trailer wiring

The factory "Trailer-Charge" circuit is powered only with the key-on, from the starting battery. Unless you have the factory aux battery with the V10. Then it stays always on, connected to the aux battery, and both will charge when the engine is running and the starting battery is charged.

For high-loads like a small AC, you need to have ample battery capacity in your trailer. Going to the house battery is too much distance for that much current.

Re: Factory trailer wiring

I understand but I have a large house battery. Would SMB have rewired the trailer wiring to that? I know-I'll call them. I just thought if they did this routinely when someone had them install house batteries someone may know.

For using the house batteries to power an AC, you ned to skip all the trailer wiring, and instead run some very heavy gauge (0-0 or heavier) welding lead directly to the trailer.

And count on the house battery going flat in an hour or two. Generally AC draws too much power to be run from a battery, even a 4D battery.

Re: Factory trailer wiring

I agree with Mike....you will pull your house batteries down quickly unless you have a huge bank trying to run an AC. Unless you build the trailer to carry like three to four 4-D batteries in the trailer. A giant power supply . Stick a reasonable generator it the trailer to charge the batteries back up while driving down the road and bingo, you're set . Really...I have thought about that. I hate the heat, but in reality I just avoid the hot places and use the Fantastic Fan if needed.

I'll be happy when someone comes out with a good AC that cools the van to 70* in 100* weather and only pulls like 3 amps off the house system. A trip to the fantasy factory I guess. It sure would be nice but then I never thought I'd be carrying a commication device like Capitan Kirk either....OK his worked on all the planets but maybe some day soon?
