Common problem. I replaced the SMB unit with an LED unit from the local auto parts store. Less than $20 and came with a lifetime warranty. Covered up the hole perfectly! Looks exactly like these...

Yes, it's a battery temp sensor for a Trace Engineering (predecessor to Xantrex) inverter/charger (I have the same one in my 1998). I think I posted the manual on the forum a few months ago if you need it.

Both bulbs not working on my 2010 SMB penthouse brake light. I removed the two end screws but can't get the Lexan cover off. I tried to pry it off with flat screw drivers placed in open tab slots. Even coordinated this with a partner and we pulled on all four slots. The center flexes out but the two ends seemed glued to thier empty screw holes. I don't want to break it in the process. Any suggestions?

You can find a new one at

Drill some weep holes before installing,

I also put a little waterproof grease around the lense before installing;

Your process for trying to get the lense off, seems correct, sounds like it is just seriously stuck.
