How to disable "Courtesy Lights?"

Every time I open a door on my 2012 Ford SMB, the running lights (or "Courtesy Lights") come on momentarily. Can someone please tell me how to disable this feature? Thx!

Re: How to disable "Courtesy Lights?"

Do you mean the exterior parking lights or the interior dome/courtesy lights?

If you mean the exterior lights, they should only come on when you lock or unlock the van, not when you open the doors.

If you mean the interior lights, you can turn the dome lights off with a switch at the light.

Exterior lights. My van is a 2012 and every time I open a door, the exterior running lights (or "Courtesy Lights") come on momentarily. Am I the only one whose Ford van does this? Please help me disable this feature. Thx!

Re: How to disable "Courtesy Lights?"

I'm still confused as what the lights are.

Are the the same lights that flash when you lock the van? Or are they some lights on the side of the van, maybe shining on running boards?

Re: How to disable "Courtesy Lights?"

Ford Expedition, not van, but I imagine it might work.
Deactivating/activating perimeter lamps illuminated entry

You may perform the following power door lock sequence to
enable/disable the perimeter lamps feature.
Note: Before starting, ensure the ignition is in the 1 (LOCK) position and all vehicle doors are closed.

You must complete Steps 1–5 within 30 seconds or the procedure will
have to be repeated. If the procedure needs to be repeated, wait a
minimum of 30 seconds before beginning again.

1. The ignition must be OFF to
begin the sequence.
2. Place the key in the ignition and
turn the ignition to the 3 (RUN)
position.
3. Press the power door unlock
control on the door panel three
times.
4. Turn the ignition from the 3
(RUN) position to the 1 (LOCK) position.
5. Press the power door unlock control on the door panel three times.
6. Turn the ignition back to the 3 (RUN) position. The horn will chirp
one time to confirm programming mode has been entered and is active.
7. Press the power door unlock control twice within 5 seconds. Note:
The horn will chirp once to indicate the perimeter lighting feature has
been deactivated. The horn will chirp once and honk once (one short
and one long) to indicate the perimeter lighting feature has been
activated.
8. Turn the ignition to the 1 (LOCK) position to exit the procedure.
Note: The horn will chirp once to confirm the procedure is complete.

Re: How to disable "Courtesy Lights?"

The "Courtesy Lights" are part of the headlight/tail light system, similar to (or the same as) the parking lights. And btw, thx for your help...

Re: How to disable "Courtesy Lights?"

The reason for my confusion is that I've only heard the term Courtesy Lights applied to interior lights in the footwell area or lights that illuminate the the door entry area from either the door or the outside of the vehicle.

Be that as it is, good luck with disabling the lights.

Re: How to disable "Courtesy Lights?"

Has anyone else had any luck disabling the "feature" where the exterior running lights come on when the door opens?

I tried the procedure listed below on my 2012 Ford E-350 with no luck. The horn "chirped" on steps 6 and 8, but no joy on step 7.

I ended up just removing the bulbs from the interior map lights, but of course can't do that with the exterior lights. Can't stand it when all the lights come on when I open the door. . .

UPDATE: After doing additional research, it looks like the procedure was changed in the 2011 year model, and the "feature" must now be changed by your dealer (if at all).

Re: How to disable "Courtesy Lights?"

I have a 2010 E350 and was annoyed with the exterior lights coming on every time the doors were opened. My "low tech" solution was to take a strip of sheetmetal about 3/4 in wide and 3 in long. I bent it into a hat shape about 1/2 in high with tabs sticking out 1/2 inch. I placed it over the switches in the door frame and attached it with small sheet metal screws. That keeps the plunger from coming out when the door is opened and the lights stay off.

Re: How to disable "Courtesy Lights?"

My dealer had to disconnect a wire to keep my dome light from coming on when the doors opened as my light did not have a switch to turn that "feature" off. They could not figure out how to turn the courtesy lights off so I may end up doing the lo-tech mod mentioned above. (2011 E350).
