Mileage on diesels - BullyDogs - Redline 85 Plus

I am new to the forum and appreciate the size and interest of all the members.
Question: I have a 2005 SMB E-350 Super Duty 6.0L V8 Diesel - - when I bought it I was told I would get 20 MPG - - I've never had better than 11 unless I was driving DOWNhill from Tahoe. When I spoke with the seller he said he consistently got 18 - 20 MPG with good 'gas pedal' management and by using his BullyDog.
Without a Bullydog I hear that the E-350 Diesel does not get much better than 11 MPG - - can anyone verify that?
With a Bullydog - - what is your experience? Has anyone seen a big improvement in mileage?
Lastly, does anyone have any experience with Redline Diesel Fuel Additive 85 Plus?

Thank you!

Re: Mileage on diesels - BullyDogs - Redline 85 Plus

I have pretty much the exact same van although mine is 4x4. I can probably get 17 with a tail wind at 55mph, but usually it is below 15 with "good gas pedal management" meaning an average of 60mph, easing up hills, etc. My pre-fuel crisis driving style, 75+ with the AC running got me a real consistent 11.6x.

I haven't measured it in a long time, and the fuel filling problems make it difficult to gauge accurately, but I'd say "nothing better than 11 without a bullydog" is total BS.

Incidentially I think getting 20 over more than a small stretch is also total BS.

Re: Mileage on diesels - BullyDogs - Redline 85 Plus

We have an '08 EB with the 6.0L PSD 4x4 that weighs around 11,000 lbs and our best mileage was 17.5 mpg. We usually get between 15 and 17 with our worst tank at 13 mpg. The worst included about 150 miles of off road driving with lots of steep climbs. I am a pretty conservative driver and accelerate and brake gradually and on the freeway we usually run between 60-70 mph.

Your mileage sound low but with a heavy vehicle like a SMB is you accelerate and brake hard for stop lights you could drop your mileage significantly.

I am not familiar with the Bull Dog so I can't help there.

John

Re: Mileage on diesels - BullyDogs - Redline 85 Plus

My guess is most tuner or chips can help a bit with mileage but I'll wait until 100K and the warrantee is off the motor. I use the scan gauge as a tool to keep the lead off my feet when driving long distances especially flat drives. My engine started with mileage about 11 to 12 then after 24K and adding AMSOIL it moved up around 13 to 14MPG. Now at 45K I see 15 to 18MPG. These are only from what the scan gauge shows on flat land, cruise control on, no heavy wind, and traveling 55MPH. Add having to climb hills and my overall mileage drops back down to about 13MPG. I haven't done a mileage test lately so it might be better now.
Dave.
