New alternator

My stock alternator has broken down. What kind of alternator do you recommend? i am looking for more power than stock, but it must be reliable.

I have looked at the internet and found out that the housing is different in some cases, what does it mean?

I have 1999 eb with a 7,3 td engine in mine van.

Thank you.

Re: New alternator

Not trying to hi-jack your thread or turn this into a gas Vs. diesel thing but I could also use alternator advice for a 92 E350 5.8l. I would like to increase the power output and reliability is important to me also.

Will a 7.3l alternator bolt up to a 5.8l gasser?

Re: New alternator

I've been quite happy with my alternator from these guys:

You can get as much power as you want to pay for. I opted for a HD 140A alternator.

Thanks for the link. I like the fact the 140A HD alternator is USA made. What is the function of the bridge rectifier?

An altenator makes AC current... Basically the bridge rectifier (also called diode pack sometimes) converts the output to DC current.

Re: New alternator

Mean Green has a good rep (I have a starter from them in my Bronco), but they're not cheap, and sadly there's not much info on their website.

E-series aren't specifically called out either, just F-series/Expeditions/full sized Broncos.

Does your van have dual altenators? The upper one has adifferent case or housing then the lower one does if I remeber correctly.

The housing is the outer case and just means how it bolts on to the engine. Most decent places that sell altenators locally or on line can help you get a larger amperage altenator that will still replace your stock one.

As mentioned above, the bridge rectifier converts AC to DC for use in the van. A bigger rectifier is more durable than the a smaller one. With the 140A alternator, I went with the standard HD rectifier. 2 years no issues.

One thing I like about this company is the alternator is all new, not rebuilt. It fit and worked out of the box, no problems.

Re: New alternator

You can always have a custom one built. I had Nations build me one and they did a great job.

Re: New alternator

You can always get an alternator from Premier Power Welder, but financially it's probably not worth it unless you're considering an onboard welder in the future.
