No Sun - Whats the story w/Wind Power

Do any of you Folks use a wind power turbine as primary/backup battery charging source?

Twas kicking around forums & search - maybe I missed it...why this is not a good option. I mean, if they work well on the ocean why not boondocking. The ones I've seen look like you could make it so it's a quick no-brainer set up. I'm sure the noise would be a issue, but while parked under a thick tree canapy, while off doing your thing, what the hell, Spin Away ! Something made for marine applications would be my choice...just think'n something like this could be adapted for the Cool-aid Van.

Thank you

Re: No Sun - Whats the story w/Wind Power

I would think it depends on the type of camping you do along with your storage issues. Myself I don't even use my portable panel very much at all. I move too much to have to hassle with setup and tear down. If it's OC I still get a slight charge but because I'm on the road as a rule I don't worry too much. Even though a small wind unit might pack up well, I'm usually strapped for space, so I rely on the roof top solar (hopefully), a larger battery bank, and a high output alternator none of which has to be set up tore down and won't get stolen. And with my luck it would always be calm when I need to charge using a wind generator. A small Honda 1000 W generator (or smaller) might be heavier and take up more space but it will be a more reliable backup for charging

But how friggin cool would it be to have a wind generator! I'd love to have one.

I've thought about windmill power, you can get a lot more power from wind than solar if, and only if, you have a modest amount of wind. The biggest downside I saw was that it takes up a lot of room when packed up, and if you really want to ensure getting to good wind, you need a pretty tall tower.

Check out the portable Wind Generator at www.bhasolar.com I came across this site while looking for a replacement Kyocera Solar Panel last week . I also have considered a small packable generator .

You could put the turbine on the roof and take advantage of 65 Mph winds on your way down the highway.

From what I've been able to find (or maybe more appropriately, not find) I don't think this concept ever made it into production, but the idea seems very promising for an RV.

Re: No Sun - Whats the story w/Wind Power

When we've had the misfortune to camp in a really windy location we usually pack up and moved on before our batteries would run low.

But I guess if you're a wind surfer, or a camping with a big group in J-tree in the winter, having a wind powered generator makes sense.
