Off-road ish car GPS

I saw a mention of some kind of GPS for off road vehicles here, but for the life of me I can't find the thread. It had some kind of large-ish screen with topo or sat images, I think.

Any pointers?

I love my Garming GPSmap 76c for offroad, and noticed they still sell them new at the marine store. Not "largish screen" Did you search on carputer?

I think you may be thinking of the Lowrance Baja GPS.They have a 5" to 7" screen and are better for off roading.

Nice features, but now I need a computer to bring along too? I wonder if one system can run street navigation and wilderness topo/maps?

I have the Garmin Oregon 450t and I added Garmin City Navigator to it for an additional $100. Combined with Garmin's MapSource software, I find it works pretty good, though the screen is not large. For example, if I am headed to one of the trails in the Massey book, I can make waypoints in MapSource from the supplied GPS coordinates then make a route and load it into the navigator. In the van, I touch Where To > Route > My Route and the City Navigator guides me to the starting point along city streets. The in-town navigation is not as good as my Garmin Nuvi 765, so I usually use that until I am close to the route, then switch to the Oregon.

I find the Oregon great for hiking and also for geocaching. I am amazed at how many of the remote places I have been that are lousy with geocaches!

Thanks for the help, it was the Baja I had seen, like a boat chart plotter.

Not so much interested in dealing with a PC as a nav system (been there, done that). Also already have some great hand-helds, I just liked the idea of a larger screen and topo/trail info.

I have a Garmin StreetPilot 7500 with a 7" screen. I bought it for my son when he was driving semi-trucks. When he quit his job I confiscated it. I like the large screen because it is easy to see. But it does take up a lot of room. I have both the street maps and topo maps.

Can you trace the trail you're on so you can go back and follow it at a later date? My PC has standard USGS topo maps and I can trace the trail in whatever color and style line I wish.

The PC is kinda big but I don't want to loose that option. Saved my butt more than once.
