Replacing House Batteries - Recommendations?

Hi Folks -

I'm going to be replacing my two (2) house batteries in my '05 Ford EB350 Sportmobile in the Spring - I have twin 12V 27 AGM now, from Batteries Plus (model SLI27AGMDPM), which show as $349 / each on their website. (OUCH).

Does anyone want to recommend anything else, that I won't have to sell a kidney for?

Thanks for any insight!

Joe

Where are you located? I know a really good deal on group 27 AGM batteries in Colorado.

(BTW on this tiny little forum ALL users should really fill in their location under settings, this question comes up all the time when lurkers post once a while with questions)

1. Is the deal only on group 27 size or say 4Ds as well?
2. What brands?
3. Is it legal?

Asking for a friend of course

At the same price but more AH, I have these going on 3 years this coming spring and they haven't faded (according to my Cheapo guage) one bit.
I'm happy with them.

Yep, go to Batteries plus and get two of their best quality lead acids of the same type, they are probably going to be rebranded East Penn/Deka with a Duracell Pro label on them, a really great battery. You'll get them for less than $200 for both probably.

Everyone thinks they need AGMs but I disagree. I used to buy them. I quit. They aren't worth the extra money for the slight difference in output and supposed longevity. I have bought a couple for interior layouts but I currently have two lead acids inside my rig right now from Batteries Plus and they haven't killed me yet (due to offgassing). I spend 24 hours a day in my van several days a week.

Really, why do you think you need AGMs?

For outside use the only downside of flooded vs AGM is that you need to keep the water level topped off in the flooded battery.

For inside use you have the above water level issue and a (relatively small) risk of explosion of out-gassed hydrogen.

We spend boatloads of time doing risk analyses when developing products; this typically involves 3 variables....severity, occurrence, and detectability.

In the case of hydrogen explosion, the severity is high but the occurrence and detectability are low.

..a few other trade-offs....

AGMs are more $$...as we all know

If you overcook a flooded battery and catch the problem early you can replace water for a chance at some more battery life.

Overcook an AGM and it vents........game over....AGMs are valve regulated lead acid (VRLA)..once the valve vents it's toast

Since AGMs are sealed you can mount them any any orientation.
