Satellite Antenna Mounting Questions (Sirius vs. XM)

So I installed Sirius today and have yet to mount the antenna.
With XM I had the antenna inside on the dash and it worked fine. However, I was told that the Sirius antenna has to be mounted outside.

From previous posts it seems people have it routed like charlie56:

My question is, by going under the weather stripping around the windshield, can water get in at the point where the antenna wire comes out of the weather stripping? If water gets in there, does it get inside the van or is that a problem?

Thanks for any help.

steve

Re: Satellite Antenna Mounting Questions (Sirius vs. XM)

The antenna wire is just tucked under the molding, it does not penetrate it. Mine is routed to the right side, down to the fender, entering the passenger compartment where the rubber cable housing goes from the door to an opening under the dash.

Did you check out this post?

I want to add a second antenna to my portable because as the satellite moves, trees will cause the signal to go in and out. Drives me nutz. BTW mine is mounted in the same method as the previous poster and works good provided there are no thick tree cover around.

Re: Satellite Antenna Mounting Questions (Sirius vs. XM)

Thanks washpark and daveb.

Washpark: I know it just tucks under but since there would be a small raise of the rubber moulding I thought water could get behind the rubber and didn't know where that goes.

daveb: I did see that post. Do you mean yours is mounted like washpark and charlie56 (the photo above)? If so then same comment to you about water getting behind the windshield moulding.

Re: Satellite Antenna Mounting Questions (Sirius vs. XM)

I've never looked for rust if that's your concern but no leaks inside. You might call SMB and ask for Randy who installs the stuff but he is usually putting them in as a first install. He did have to replace mine after a couple of years and never said anything about rust. Best bet would be to find someone who has replaced a windshield that's had an antenna in place for several years...I'd like to know myself. Maybe try a company who regularly replaces vehicle windshields?
