Scan Guage II, 6.0 PSD, and cool down
OK, so we are now the proud owners of a 2008 SMB with 6.0 PSD. We have seen discussions about the need to let them cool off after high speed use or after use with heavy weight.
We also have a scan guage II.
Soooo if we wanted to monitor something for cool down, what would it be? and what is an acceptable temp?

I wait until my EGTs are at 400 degrees F or less before shutting down.

Bronco,
I take it EGT is something the scan guage can show me?

My bad. As far as I know, the Scan Guage does not have the ability to display Exhaust Gas Temps. The company adds capability from time to time, so you may want to check with them. To the best of my knowledge, Ford does not offer an EGT gauge in the E-series, so they don't equip the vans with thermocouples. This may be differnt on '08s.
Since I tow, I added an BD Power X-monitor (I got this before getting the Scan Guage). It uses thermocouples to measure EGTs and trans temps. The EGT thermocouple necessitates drilling a hole and adding a bung to the exhaust system. Some people swear by measuring EGTs before the turbo, and many people swear by adding pre-turbo so they know what temps the turbo is seeing. Mine's pre-turbo.

I will say the X-monitor, and Scan Guage displays suck in daylight. With the Scan Guage, save you money and avoid the rearview mirror mount ( http://www.mgtmotorsports.com/blendmount.html). It's a very nice unit and very nice install, but the dim illumination, coupled with the daylight coming through the windshield, it's almost impossible to read the display.

We will be mounting our Scan Guage on the dash directly in front of the driver and under a dashmat, hopefully this will give us some visibility.
So what can we or should we monitor to know when the vehicle is cooled down?

You can monitor boost. If you drive it 5 minutes at low boost before you shut it down you will be ok.
For normal use, it isn't an issue. I get the 5 minutes on surface streets before I get home.

For what its worth, I've never had any difficulty reading the display on our Scan Gauge. You can adjust the colors and the brightness. Maybe it is just our mounting position. I just need to figure out what the maximum values for the water temp and transmission temp should read before I become concerned.

Before I got my ScanGauge, I got the water temp high enough to move the factory gauge near the upper peg, and to cause the cpu to take the throttle away -hmmm, I don't know, but maybe 250??
Since then I modified my front bumper (added 11 2" holes) and added an air baffle so air cannot go under the radiator. Now, I can't get the factory gauge to move and the ScanGauge hasn't gone over 225.
I just sent my ScanGuage back for the upgrade to X-Gauge so I can monitor trans temp on the trip back to Iowa.

I called the scan gauge guys about a month ago and asked if they were planning on adding an EGT sensor/function. They have no plans to do so. Shame, that....

Well, it looks like for the time being we will be monitoring coolant temp, transmission fluid temp, fuel economy and avg tank fuel economy....
unless there are better suggestions that coolant and tranny temps for cool-down??
