spare key

My new (to me) van only came with one key and remote. I think I can buy a remote on ebay and code it to my van, but I was wondering if the key is chipped for anti-theft.

Also, since my van has factory keyless entry, does that mean I can buy one of those keypads and program it to work?

Thanks!

Re: spare key

Herb,

Any info on the key itself? I feel like I should get a spare asap in case something happens to my only key.

Re: spare key

Sorry, not sure about the key. I think I had a duplicate made for my '01 Excursion, and I don't think there was any security chip or programing involved, but I can't swear to it.

Re: spare key

None on 02 either, but I bet by 06 there probably was.

Re: spare key

I guess I could always call the dealer. For some reason, I have little faith in getting a proper answer though.

Re: spare key

It was optional. If you have PATS, there will be a THEFT light that lights up for a moment when you start up. Also the PATS keys have a fat base, while the non-PATS keys have the skinny base.
