Re: Stranded in Durango!!!

If everything worked prior to the new batteries, and the alternator checks out ok, something might not have been put back in place correctly.

Are the batteries the same size? Are they grounding out somewhere? Defective battery? Have them tested. They can be damaged during shipping new.

Double check all your connections and wire routing. If your mechanic didn't clean the battery connectors properly it could cause problems.

Re: Stranded in Durango!!!

If it worked great for many hundreds of miles, and we then went "offroad" on a fairly rough road, which loosened connections, would it act like this- alternator reading at dash cig lighter low, and scangauge voltmeter low, and declining as we drive, and not going up w/ revving engine? In other words, it might just be loose connnections as opposed to a bad alternator and/or voltage regulator?

The mechanic is charging the batteries, and said the terminals were loose, and he thought that mught be all it is.

Thanks
John

Re: Stranded in Durango!!!

Sounds very possible. He should easily be able to tell if the alternator was bad. You will know within a few miles of driving. The scan gage or volt meter should show at least 14 volts on the chassis battery(s) when going down the road if the alternator is working. Do not know what year your vehicle is but I think most .... if not all... have the voltage regulator function build into the alternator.

Good Luck!!!

Re: Stranded in Durango!!!

If the connections to at least one of the chassis batteries are loose, would that make the voltage in the dash and on the scangauge read low, even if the alternator was OK?

Re: Stranded in Durango!!!

Glad to here you are on the road again.

Our alternator gave out at 60k+ miles. One of those things you don't notice right away. That is until you glance at the gages and bam the voltage needle is heading south. We also had road service but only needed them to point us to the nearest dealership. Was easy to wire the house and chassis batteries together and make it there.

Glad everything is O.K.
