Oh sorry, I meant it has a engine belt driven compressor, not a stand alone electric one.

Re: 12v air conditioner vs Danhard

I have the newer Danhard unit in my 2008 SMB. It is 110 but I can run it on the highway without issue from the house batteries and inverter. Just did it today in fact. Cannot use it in stop and go because the alternator just barely keeps up with power draw at highway speeds. Actually it uses slightly more, but if you start with 80%+ charge it holds fine.

Hope that helps. It also works great on shore power here in the humid south. Camping would be impossible, IMO, in July-Aug without it.

Re: 12v air conditioner vs Danhard

I got the Danhard with my van and have enjoyed using it on hot days when I am able to plug in. Hopefully this was an isolated incident but last year I was camped down in Florida in the sun at a state park with the AC on. Towards the middle of the day, I noticed water near the AC air intake vent. It looked like someone poured a bunch of water and it was draining from under the wood. I could not see any problems by removing the vent alone and just put some towels over the area until I made it home to do a deeper dive.

Once I removed the entire wood panel (and all the seals for the wood) I saw the problem:

Turns out the chiller unit "shifted" and the rubber hose that connected to the drain hose was crimped, effectively not allowing the unit to drain.

I never really understood why the hose was added to begin with, but after removing it, and re-positioning the chiller, I ended up with something more manageable:

I did sustain water damage to the wood panel and hopefully with no more repeat occurrences, I won't see anymore damage.

Hopefully this is an isolated issue and no one else has seen this problem for their Danhard units.

Re: 12v air conditioner vs Danhard

FWIW I am quite happy so far with my cheap AC solution for being parked with the penthouse top up.

viewtopic.php?f=16&t=14101

I punched some grommets into a weather fly and gave it the thunderstorm test: no problems. Works great, sets up in a minute or two once the pop top is up, can cool the van interior to below 70 with 95 degree Virginia humidity outside, is the cheapest solution I've seen, and replacement parts etc are a Walmart away.

Might not be a good solution for everyone though.
