I will say I enjoy having a cup of espresso inside the van when the weather sucks outside. But I really don't try to cook inside the van and why the smaller tank. YMMV
Yeah that would be ideal there is a lot of space back there on each side of where the spare goes it seems like a great place for one. Did your come with it or did you install/have it installed? If so do you know the model number?

Not off hand. SMBW did the install. I thought I'd never need propane inside but it's so nice not to have to pull out a butane (or other) stove every time I want hot water for something like tea or coffee in the early morning.

I had not thought of putting the propane tank behind the rear wheel. There is definitely room for one. Will have to mock something up to see if it will work with my setup.

Daveb's tank looks like a Manchester. If so, it should have an ID plate on the back side, near the bottom. The plate will look similar to the one in the attached photo. The model number is circled in yellow in the pic. If you can get the model number, you can contact a Manchester dealer to price it out. If you contact Manchester directly, they can't sell you a tank, but you can sweet talk them into sending you a schematic--like the one in the second photo--that you can use to pre-test fit.

Interesting Dave. I'm surprised SMB installed that. I have always assumed no one uses that spot for propane due to the chance of more rocks or whatever your wheels throw hitting it. Also, the corner seems like a more likely place to get hit in an accident than the side where most mount them. I like that little tank, though, I'd love to know more about it if you find out. Plus, with an Aluminess bumper giving more protection on the corner I wouldn't be as concerned with it being hit there.

For anyone reading that hasn't seen this thread it's definitely helpful.

Manchester makes RV style and van style tanks.......

The RV style has the fittings are up a bit higher than the van style.....those usually require an access door. The One in Dave B's picture appears to be the van style.

I bought the 5 gallon van style from gowesty.com They have several styles....IIRC the 5 gallon and 8 gallon are both about 8" in diameter one is about 24" long and the other about 30" long

LPG Tank | GoWesty

LPG Tank | GoWesty

They also sell a 3.3 gallon skinny one for VW vans...that should fit an SMB easily

LPG Tank with Regulator | GoWesty

Manchester also makes 10" diameter horizontal tanks, but they are a tight fit under an econoline, especially if you have rear heat/air and want to mount it on the driver's side. There are a few sites selling these online.

I used this regulator although I've had a few issues with it......had to whack it with a screwdriver handle to get it to work a couple of times.

LPG Gas Regulator (2-Stage) | GoWesty

it's been functioning properly the last couple times out; if I were to buy another (which i may) I'll probably buy this regulator from Karl at westyventures.com

about half way down this page:

Westy Ventures / Propex heaters

I use propane only for heating (with a Propex heater)....i had a couple of minor issues with my propex 2211 (one of them self-inflicted) and Karl at westyventures has been extremely helpful...if you are thinking of buying a Propex heater Karl is highly recommended.

I've probably used my heater around 15 nights so far this year, and I just refilled my tank....took 2.1 gallons so the heater uses way less propane than I expected.

I think this is the one daveb has on his rig. They are Manchester tanks and not priced to terribly.

Those are the ones that I mentioned above...10" and 12" in diameter. When I was entertaining using these, I took a dinner plate and used it as a diameter template under the van...things were too tight for my liking.

The images on that page show the difference between the RV style and van style for fitting location.

Big but cheap. Maybe it could work under the rear of a van.
