Pick It Up!

I will be at SMB West on the 20th of August for go over and write the check for the "Green Machine". They are putting me up for the night and Friday morning we are off to Reno where I will take posession. I plan on taking it for a little break-in spin up 359 with a side trip over to Tule Lake NWR, Hart Mountain, Steen's Mountain and Malheur NWR. I figure a week should be a good check out time before I get back here to Gig Harbor.

Re: Pick It Up!

Congrats, Jim! That will be one exciting trip.

So, you'll be in Fresno to pay, but taking possession in Reno? Is there some logic that yields some advantage?

Re: Pick It Up!

Isn't that the way you avoid paying the California taxes!?!
If I read it correctly in an other post...

Re: Pick It Up!

If you don't live in California, you won't pay California taxes anyway.

I believe you will pay CA taxes if you phyically transfer the vehicle in CA.

If you take posseion in CA, they make you pay CA taxes. You can't even ride in it going to NV. CA can't figure out why they are going broke when they are so business and consumer friendly.

Re: Pick It Up!

So if you cant even ride in it, do you follow it to Reno? Who gets to drive it there?
We were thinking we could use the drive as a shakedown in a way since a Sportsmobile person will be going along.
I dont understand why you cant even ride along as a passenger. Why not just wait to pay until you cross the border.

Re: Pick It Up!

WA gives credit for all the CA sales tax paid, so when you go to register, you just pay the difference on what is owed. In King county (mine), our registration fees are slightly higher than the CA sales tax paid and that was what I owed.
As always, your mileage may vary.

By the way, it sounds like a great trip.

California is crazy, thats why you can't even ride in it.

You follow in rental car. Many states don't have an agreement with CA, and if they don't have an agreement you can't buy it in CA without paying CA taxes.

I just went through this 3 months ago.
