Rear 12V A/C schooling needed

OK, I must only have a very basic understanding of A/C systems. I'm looking over the condition and routing of the refrigerant lines that head back into, and out of the rear (aftermarket, not Ford) A/C system. My seemingly simple question is, why are there four lines into/out-of this box?

My simple understanding is that there would be a cold line in, the condensor, and then the "hot" line out. What gives?

Herb

BTW, noticed the A/C lines travel right past the exhaust manifold on their way to the rear of the van? Think my next project is some heat shield for the A/C lines.

Is it a heater too? Maybe engine coolant for the heater?

Herb,

Could two of them be heat and two for AC?

There should be at least 3 lines. In, Out, and condensation drain. Could that last line actually be a protected wiring harness? If there actually are 4 lines, plus the drain, it must have a heat option too.

d'oooooh. I'm guessing that the simplest answer is the right answer, lines for heat. Will verify tomorrow.

Looking at your album pics..... Are you sure it isn't factory? It is in the same place. Ford allows the rear HVAC to be ordered without controls, so just because the dial is somewhere other than the dash, doesn't necessarily mean its not factory.

Checked the factory window sticker. Not the factory Ford rear A/C. I'm pretty sure that it's the aftermarket A/C system that SMBw installs. I want to say ProAir.

Glad I looked it up. I see there's a Product/Troubleshooting manual there.
