Thinking abt 2020 Transit AWD
Soon to be first time campervan owner. Priced out a 2020 AWD high roof Transit and am thinking of having SMB Fresno do a complete build with shower, toilet with black tank, galley, etc. I saw one thread complaining about their work. Any other viable options for a complete build out in California? Anyone know if their prices on vans are competitive? I have a Costco price from the local Ford dealer but easier to have them take delivery than me drive it down.

The pricing will be competitive when you factor in the cost of you paying for the van while it sits and waits to be built. For all the flack SMB gets, they are a pretty good place to get work done. There are better builders out there, but they don't have the capacity or the experience of SMB. You can look at a full custom shop like outside van or titan vans, but they will be the same price as SMB.
Have you spoken with SMB about the timing of when they could start your build if you deliver the van to them? Last I knew they were at least 6 months out and more if you wanted them to source a 4x4 sprinter for you. Some people have waited over 24 months for their build to be completed.
Also, where are you in CA? There are a lot of builders in Portland and a few others scattered around. Not many in SoCal because it's too expensive to have the warehouse space you need. The only ones I know of are Cardiff Campervan (too small to do what you want) and RB Components who were 9 months out on vans as of several weeks ago when I was there.

Got mine Monday, have another unit coming with more options soon. We'll have a lift kit done next week.
