Transmission options 6.0

I have been looking around the net to see the differnces between the Torqshift Transmission and the ELEC 5-SPD AOD W/O TOW-HAUL. I am the second owner and was wondering why the previous owner would pay an extra $385 (listed on the window sticker) to not get thet Torqshift Transmission but the 5-SPD AOD W/O TOW-HAUL. I do tow a 8500lb travel trailer and was wondering the differences between the two - positive or negative.

They are the same transmission. There is no choice in the vans.

The Torq Shift and the 5 sp AOD are the same, but the Tow-Haul feature was never available in the E-series, so I hope no one payed extra for that.

The shift stalk selector on the E-series just takes the trans out of O/D, while on the F-series, I believe it changes the shift points.

The E-series did not (and still doesn't?) offer the integrated brake controller either.

I also have a 2005 Excursion 6.0 with Torqshift and when I push the tow/haul mode it will automatically downshift on the steep grades - the harder I brake the lower the gear. So what you are sayings is they just took of the tow/haul mode and put on O/D off mode. My transmission does not down shift automatically like my Excursion.

I think that's about it. I tow in the mid-6K range, so I'd really like having the Tow-Haul mode myself. For downhills, at a minimum, I'll take the O/D off, downshift as necessary, and my trailer has electric brakes on both axles which helps a lot.

Mine has the tow haul button on the end of the shifter. When going down a hill it down shifts when I tap the brakes. I love it.

Craig,

You have Tow/Haul???? I'm so jealous. I've never heard of it being available on the E-series.

Based upon a quick Google search, it looks like Tow/Haul was available on every engine except the diesel. Someone at Ford needs to explain that logic to me.

And I thought the extra $385 for the ELEC 5-SPD AOD W/O TOW-HAUL was something better than the TOW-HAUL. It must be $385 more than the manual transmission. I also wish I had the tow-haul in my SMB. It works great in my Excursion with the 6.0 Diesel. First they detune my 6.0 down to 225hp now no tow-haul, maybe I should of have gone with the V10

I wish the manual trans was available in the van. Would have ordered it in a flash. I much prefer a manual transmission. When you have a problem with a manual trans you can usually drive it out, when you have a problem with an automatic you are usually stuck! I think about that sometimes when I'm far from a road.

Plus, a manual trans is cheaper (~$1000), easier to work on at home and gives feeling of control when you get to choose the gear you want to be in.
