Which 7.3 Model Year?

I need help from you wise ones who know all things about 7.3 Ford vans:

If all these are relatively equal: RB, side barn doors, 7.3 diesel, auto, 150,000-ish miles, WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES in buying a 2000, 2001, 2002, or 2003?

If it makes any difference to you in your answer:

I'm going to gut everything and probably do a full UJoint from the body down; plus, I'll have the engine redone w/ new parts, the transy rebuilt, all as needed. I'll repaint the body and replace seals and windows, if needed. Then, I'll have SMB do a Penthouse top & some other stuff. All of this not necessarily in the order listed.

Thanks, JC

No difference. Those are all the same. Interior, trans, everything I'm pretty sure.

Re: Which 7.3 Model Year?

1998-2002 were all the same but the 2003 had more HP stock...well they did in the trucks not sure about vans. Why rebuild the motor if its not needed 150k is not much on a 7.3 engine wise, I would be more concern with the trans. Have you found a 7.3?

Re: Which 7.3 Model Year?

Yes, rather, I'm about to start serious discussion on a 2000 cargo. Haven't seen it yet. Price will be around $5k.

Donno what I'm going to do if it turns out to have a sliding door. Really want the barn style so I can keep an awning window on passenger side open. Not sure how the sliding door would hold up to 4x4 trails, anyway. Will get a look ~Monday.

My worry, and the source of the question, is if I like it, do I pass in the hopes of finding a 2002-3?

Re: Which 7.3 Model Year?

7.3's have been in use for many years, don't think they have changed that much if at all during their use and for the most part, are bullet proof. Any year would be good, if you want more power, plan on towing, cooler running, look at doing some mods, one good one is going with a larger exhaust. I just chipped mine with a BD-tuner, woke that beast up. That being said, there are differences in the 7.3's installed in the vans, smaller turbo and no inter cooler, so when/if boosting just make sure the tuner knows its for the E series. DP has tunes for both F and E.
