Can you tell me more about how it is attached to the cargo box arm? I don't see that option on the 1upUSA website.
Steve - I had a custom swing arm made. See this thread.

That's the magic of 1ups. They have a compression fitting that hold the rack rock solid. See this http://www.sportsmobileforum.com/vie...214&hilit=bike. There are lots of other bike rack threads.

Don

EDIT: I misread your question as referring to the hitch mount. 1up sells roof mount trays that you attach to an Aluminess or other cargo box rack top. We have said rack top and hope to add the 1ups back there some day to use when we don't want the bikes in front. In the meantime, we'll use a Yakima fork mount and a Thule tray mount, neither of which holds a candle to the 1 ups.

I installed Aluminess' new bike rack swing arm:
http://www.aluminess.com/accessories/ou ... cessories/

To which you can then mount 1upusa's roof tray rack:

And, I agree that the 1up rack is the best rack that I have owned.

Re: Bicycle Rack Recommendation Wanted

Thanks for all the feedback. This all seems more complicated (and more expensive) than I anticipated. My bike is a hybrid meant for city riding and not a mountain bike. I mostly wanted a way to bring it with me to the beach. I am wondering if something like this might work to carry the bike inside. If I position it behind the front seats, the bike could be kept in place inside the van and I wouldn't have to worry about a lot of the drawbacks of having the bike mounted outside, front or rear. It would probably only work for one bike and not two, but initially, that isn't a problem. I'll keep you all posted if I decide to try this.

Re: Bicycle Rack Recommendation Wanted

^^^ i wouldnt pay the asking price for that piece. too much for not enough rack imho, but if you think a setup like that will work for you, just get those adapters and mount them in your van where they are most convenient. ive seen another member use clamps like that but he bolted them down in the back so the bikes sat sideways.

his build thread is here: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=14600

Re: Bicycle Rack Recommendation Wanted

Visibility and debris hitting your bike are my main gripes about front hitch mount racks. If you're like me and just haul city/beach cruiser bikes check out Hollywood Bike Racks. Favorite part about it is the hitch mount tightening feature so it minimizes wobble. Also, it's quick mount and dismount of the bikes. It tilts and folds up in multiple configurations too. Was just a couple hundo. Need to add hitch ext if you have an Aluminess box tho

Re: Bicycle Rack Recommendation Wanted

It doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. For $75 you can find a used Yakima or Thule hitch rack on CL that will work fine, albeit without all the bells and whistles. For maybe double that you can get a swing-away version of the same (used). I got my Thule swing-away hitch rack for $185 on Craiglist and it works perfectly for hauling around our three hybrid bikes, or my touring or MTB bikes for that matter. We used it on our 8,000-mile cross-country road trip last year with no issues.

yes, ty! i forgot to mention that part. we have used a handful of the other brands (yakima, thule, saris, bell), but hollywood was the only one that had a setup like this for anti-wobble. i wasnt looking for any particular brand when i started looking (was going solely on spacing between bars), but was happy when i stumbled onto the hollywood setup and the spacing actually worked with our bikes.

the 1up racks are badass and appear to be very well built, but one of the coolest rack setups ive seen was from northshore. this is their 6 place setup. both brands are out of my price range though, lol.

in all honesty though, like stated above, if you just need something simple and cheap, start scanning cl in your area. only took me about a week and a half to find mine. also, when you go to look at the different racks, take your bike with you and install each one to make sure it works with your bike. i looked a 2-3 that my bike wouldnt even go onto at all.

Re: Bicycle Rack Recommendation Wanted

New Sportmobile owner - and just preparing for first trip (Florida, 3 weeks). Bought my Hollywood Racks Sportrider Hitch Rack (Model HR 1450) to carry our two hybrid bikes. I also liked this choice because it can be used with an optional Hitch Basket (Model HR 1485) for more storage space! I purchased both items and a bike cover from eTrailer.com. So far I'm satisfied.
